CHICKENS - Photographed with actual hatching eggs.

SUSSEX - Light and Coronation - 200+ year old breed from England, but are believed to have originated form birds brought by the Romans. The Light Sussex are a beautiful, dual purpose bird that was a standard of Victorian Britain. The rare & exquisite Coronation, which is a dilute blue or lavender version, was created for the coronation of King George. They are listed with the Livestock Conservancy and the all around loveliest birds we've kept. If I had to choose one breed, it would be them. Large, calm & quite hardy. Huge creamy to tan eggs, great winter layers.

ARAUCANA - The chicken unicorn. Ultra rare, for the most jaded chicken keepers. Chilean imports. They should be double tufted & rumpless, meaning, no tail. For the most serious chicken collectors. They are absolutely addicting & have the most interesting personalities. This blue one below...if ever a person was trapped in a chicken body, it's her.

TRUE AMERAUCANA - Blue Wheaten, Blue, Black - Believed to be a cross between the Chilean Araucanas (above) and American heritage breeds which were then, begining in the 70's, hybridized to meet a breed standard. They must have muffs (cheeks), a beard, a pea comb and blue/slate/black legs. Blue, aqua or green eggs are acceptable...no one wants to see pink.

BARNEVELDER - Silver Doubled Laced (LF & Bantam), Gold/Standard Double Laced, Blue Double Laced - Originating in Holland nearly 200 years ago. Known for their gorgeous lacing & dark eggs...although in the US dark eggs are a goal to work towards. We love the temperament of this breed. Curious, kind natured and friendly. Glossy, iridescent & possibly the most beautiful chicken.

MARANS - Silver Birchen, Blue Birchen, BBS - The chicken on chickens. The French Marans. Known for their gorgeous dark eggs. We keep silver and blue but are currently growing out coppers from Greenfire Farms direct imports from France which will be available in spring of 2020.

BRESSE - French import - Strong & striking pure white birds. A patriotic color scheme of red, white and blue to match the French flag. Considered a national treasure and the finest tasting chicken in the world. They may only be called "French Bresse" unless they are bred & hatched in France...like champagne. They take it that seriously.
